"Winter"

Print of the Month December 2009
"Winter"
Sure, it’s cold outside and the idea of dressing in layers and carrying camera gear isn’t appealing. Fight those thoughts as winter hikes can be most inspiring, both emotionally and photographically.
A heavy snowfall deterred travelers but inspired me to find a tranquil setting. It was a peaceful, crisp morning with the trees dressed in their winter whites, creating interesting patterns.
A golf course in southern Colorado provided my inspiration for this print of the month.
"Winter" can be viewed in a number of ways. Some will appreciate the details found in the snow covered branches, while moving their eye to the Cheyenne Mountains that greet them in the distance. Some will appreciate the peaceful mood the image represents. Yet, another group might wonder what the site would look like in Spring... and whether they would use a wood or an iron.
Snowfalls can add beauty to scenes you might ordinarily overlook. Mother Nature can be a challenging force or she may display a quiet strength.
Challenge yourself to get out when it’s easier to stay indoors.
You’ll
return with more than a great image.
I used a 300 mm lens and exposed the image at 1/8 sec at f32.5.
My shadows in the pine trees only had an EV of 12.5 and the ice on the trees had an EV of 15.5
a plus 2 development was required.
Print of the Month Information
|
The print of the month is a new print that has not been offered for sale. Once it is accepted into a gallery normal pricing applies. To create the silver gelatin prints, I expose larger format T-max 100 speed film which is processed with normal development time in D-76 1-1. Each fine art print is made by hand using Ilford-based double weight paper using traditional darkroom printing methods. The prints are double fixed and selenium toned, then washed in my vertical print washer to completely eliminate any residue. After allowing the prints to carefully dry for two days they are mounted on museum quality archival mat boards with acid free mounting tissue. This archival printing and mounting process will ensure print permanence. With proper care your print will last hundreds of years without fading. The edition number of 50 and my signature are signed on the mat below the print..
The Print of the Month special offers a 50% savings off the normal investment. |
